Day 7, Transylvania

At 2:30, thirteen of us got ready to leave on our weekend trip to Transylvania. Before we could go, however, we had to say goodbye to our five one-week volunteers, who were set to leave on Saturday. Shirley, Colleen, and Cassie (a family team: Shirley is Colleen’s mom and Cassie’s grandma, and Colleen is Cassie’s aunt), and Erin and Nicole (sisters-in-law) were only able to stay in Tutova with us for a week, and I will miss them sooooo much! Thank God for Facebook. ;-)

So those lovely ladies (including Terri, who planned to stay at the clinic for the weekend) went on to the afternoon shift with the kids, and the rest of us piled into a bus with Alin, our driver, and Florin, our tour guide. Thus began the 5-hour drive to Bran. Some highlights from the roadtrip:

*Q. When does a hill become a mountain? A. When there’s nothing taller next to it. Or when your ears pop.

*Romanian drivers are worse than Italian drivers. Most parts of the road, you can use the opposite lane to pass, and staying in your own lane—in general—seems to be optional. A submission in the Lonely Planet guide seems to be very accurate:

Despite the country’s on-book driving regulations, in reality the situation is lawless. The prevailing belief is that racing along at the very edge of disaster is the pinnacle of skilled driving. Romanians routinely risk death just to gain three seconds on their journeys, even if they’re just going to church. Moreover, anyone not conducting themselves in this unhinged manner is considered a menace, inviting abuse in the form of sustained horn blaring and curse words… Passengers, particularly in maxitaxis, should consider tequila shots and blindfolds before long trips.

*At one point, about two hours into the drive, we saw a bunch of little, tiny, brightly-colored log cabins in between some houses.

*There were a lot of above-ground pipes. Not sure if they were for gas or water.

*Amy J. said I have a cute nose?

*Romanian music would be good for belly dance, and I plan to buy a few CDs before I leave.

*We saw a couple of HUGE nests at the top of poles and such. Turns out that they belonged to storks. I saw three storks in one of these nests but wasn’t quick enough with my camera (although if Alin had been going the speed limit, I probably could have gotten the shot!)

We stayed at Vila Bran, a "mountain resort." The room Amy J. and I shared was simple and awesome. The two beds were right next to each other, but we managed to separate them by about three inches. Trent and Trevor—who also shared a room—couldn’t move the beds, so Trevor threw his mattress on the floor! Amy and I had the entire corner balcony, and each room’s balconies were separated by a wall of alternated slats of wood.

As I was getting ready for dinner, I hit my tooth with my water bottle (the cap) and bit through my lip. Ouch!

Dinner was at the restaurant at Vila Bran. I had grilled chicken. It was karaoke night, and I considered doing it (and others pushed me to do it) but after looking at the song list, I decided not to. There weren’t any very good choices. After dinner, we went outside onto the patio to take pictures—we could see Bran Castle from there, and it was all lit up. It was very cold outside, though, and I wasn’t used to it; it’s colder in Transylvania because it’s in the mountains. Even so, Amy J. wanted to go swimming (crazy!) and I refused because 1. It was cold and 2. I didn’t have a bathing suit.

Day 7

This morning, I woke up with a horrible stomachache, so I went back to bed after breakfast and didn’t make it to the clinic until about 10:30. Andreea was mad at me when I got there, because I was late, but I gave her lots of cuddles to make up for it.

After spending some time outside (and noticing that Ema-Elena was not out; someone had seen her inside with a couple of the aides), I went inside to visit with the kids in there and to take some pictures of the facility, as requested by my mom. While I took pictures of the different rooms, I found Ema all alone in the big playroom, lying on a Boppy pillow. Now, it’s possible that she had fallen asleep while the aides were with her and they just put her down there, but why not take her across the hall to the other playroom, where Shirley was with Ion and Andrei? That bothered me a little.

So I took Ema outside for some nice Vitamin D from the sun. Her leg looked worse (she had several bug bites on it, and her foot was swollen), and she wouldn’t eat for me at soup-bottle time.

Ionela’s mom visited today. I guess Ionela was due to have her second surgery (for cleft palate) sometime in July, and her mom has been calling the preschool teacher almost every day, asking about the surgery because she wants so badly to bring Ionela home. From what I’ve heard, the surgery has been pushed back to sometime this fall.

We had fruit for breakfast this morning—grapefruit, mandarin oranges, etc—and brought some of it over to see if any of the bigger kids would like to try it for snack. They weren’t big fans of the chunks, so an aide mashed up a bowlful of it. Lea-Celine and Marius liked it, but Alina got a tiny taste of it on her tongue and immediately threw up her bottle. Apparently she threw up another bottle later, as well.

Later in the morning, Cassie was sitting in the preschool room with Alexandra. Cassie found a toy that she could squeeze and blow air onto Alexandra, and it made that sweet little girl giggle up a storm! I caught a little bit of it on video, but not the best of it, unfortunately.

Some “of note” happenings today, as told to me by other volunteers:

*Sami likes to watch the construction men work on the other side of the clinic.

*Marius made eye contact with Amy D.

*Gabriela ALMOST sat up all by herself.

*Cristi went for a stroller ride.

*Daniela was mad because she was hungry at noon and the aides had to go get her special formula out of the big storage area. I guess they’re only allowed to have a single day’s supply in the smaller, closer storage cupboard.

*Oh, and Ionela got a hold of Erin's Blackberry, and instead of putting it up to her ear (like she usually does with anything that does NOT resemble a phone), she held it out in front of her and imitated Erin taking videos and interviews!

Alexandra giggling. I'm not sure how well you can hear it, but you can see it in her mannerisms. :) Also, notice the "finger-flicking" motion she makes with the toy about halfway through the video. She does that a lot.

Day 6

Good news! The dog is alive. Terri saw him last night, and other volunteers saw him today. He was limping a bit, but it looks like he’ll be fine.

I’m a loser and won’t be saying a lot tonight, so here’s just a run-down of some “of note” things that happened today:

*We figured out why there is so much grouchiness coming from the babies lately. Ema-Elena, Mihaela & Gabriela (twins), and Marius all have birthdays around the same time, and they are all cutting their two-year molars. Poor kids are in pain all the time from that, hence the crankiness.

*Sami went on a long walk today, during which he laughed a lot, pulled on leaves, and touched the metal on some buildings. Later on, he put his “pulling” skills to a not-so-good use—by pulling Erin’s hair and not letting go, which earned him a little time-out by himself in the grass. He was a trooper, though, and took his time-out well.

*Petre spit up (a LOT) on Amy J. this morning, and it seemed like he wouldn’t stop! Amy’s shorts are currently drying in the bathroom.

*Ionela and Alina had their picture taken on a motorcycle that was parked on the other side of the playground fence. Unfortunately, it was not on my camera, so I don’t have the picture.

*Little Andreea started to crawl today!

*Amy J. went on a nature walk with Ionela, and while on this walk, she (Amy) walked under a bird. You can imagine what happened next. Amy’s shirt is currently drying in the bathroom.

*Amy J. also spent some time holding Maria outside today. She picked her up out of her stroller ever-so-gently and was very good with her. Amy promised that she would hold Maria whenever she can after Nicole leaves this weekend.

*Big Andreea bit Erin on her shoulder. Not intentionally, of course, but her teeth just happened to be there, I guess.

*Mama Dog (whom we have been feeding leftover meat from lunch and dinner) sneaked through the gate to the playground today.

*Ema-Elena has a few really bad bug-bites (mosquito or something else?) on her leg, and her knee and foot were kind of inflamed today, poor girl. The nurse put some kind of ointment on it, so hopefully it will help.

This afternoon was fairly uneventful. We were only at the clinic for about an hour and a half, as we were set to go to Barlad this evening. So we did the afternoon feedings, the kids’ diapers were changed, and we put them in their cribs.

This evening, in Barlad, those of us who are going to Transylvania this weekend paid for our trip at the travel agent’s office. It cost 405 lei, or $135, plus $50 for transportation. Not bad at all, I think. After that, we wandered around the Penny Market (where Amy J. bought a purse in which to carry her necessities), then headed to dinner at a restaurant whose name I can recall. I ate more tonight than I’ve eaten in the past five days. Chicken, cheese, polenta, potatoes, chocolate crepes…yummy.

Tomorrow is the last day for the one-week volunteers, so I'm going to end this post with a few pictures and then go to socialize a bit.

Lea-Celine
Cristi let out a huge grin that I had to capture immediately before he stopped, hence the angle and zoom.
